Alice the Goon is Liz Langley's blog about sex, love, movies, traveling...you know...the good things in life.
Liz Langley's writing has appeared in Salon.com, Glamour, Industry, Bust and Destination Weddings and Honeymoons. She's been a columnsit for alternet.org, the Orlando Weekly, Toronto Sun and Orlando Sentinel. Most recently her work appeared in Best Sex Writing 2008 (Cleis Press) edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel.
And it all started with The Goon.
Alice the Goon was a character in the "Popeye," cartoons, a hulking weirdo in a midi-skirt and a flower pot hat. She loved Popeye and would chase after him, little hearts popping around her big dumb face. Popeye always ran away.
Well, everyone else loved her. "She was transgender before it was chic," said Paige Anderson, who co-founded the Orlando 'zine "Alice the Goon" with Liz in 1990, launching Liz's writing career. This blog is Liz's latest incarnation. "I'm not reliving the past....this isn't Whatever Happened to Baby Goon?" But it is a 21st century makeover for a beloved, ugly old friend.
This is a good image of Alice with Sweet Pea, which I found on Mezo Direct, a site that sells great looking action figures (including stuff from Popeye, Family Guy and Animal House!).
